Fashions from the Court of Marie-Antoinette

Marie-Antoinette (1755-1793), wife of King Louis XVI of France,  was one of the great style setters of her time. She was the daughter of Queen Maria Theresa of Austria. Marie-Antoinette, who was married to Louis XVI at age 15, was used to much simpler fashions of the Austrian court which contrasted with the  more elaborate fashions then popular at the French court. As Queen, French couturiers began to reflect Marie-Antoinette's "style" in their creations.
