In the 18th and 19th centuries, the educated classes were fascinated by the discoveries of new lands and strange new creatures. Artists accompanied the voyages of discovery to record newly found peoples and species of floral and fauna.

Wealthy collectors commissioned the production of sumptuous portfolios of engraved prints created from these artist's illustrations: tbe engravings were then beautifully hand-colored. The portfolios were produced in small quantities and are now quite rare and expensive. The prints of marine life are among the most sought after -- and valuable -- of these natural history prints. With their great detail and subtle colored they have a wonderful period charm.
