Paul Cezanne (1830-1906, a key figure in the impressionist and post impressionist movements,is often seen as the father of modern art. He was born in Aix-en-Provnce, a town in Provence, a region in the southeast of France bordering on the Mediterranean and adjacent to Italy.

Many of Cézanne's greatest oil paintings and watercolors show his intense emotional engagement with the countryside of his birthplace in Provence, where he painted some of his most compelling landscapes and penetrating portraits of family members.
