During a long career, Matisse's style evolved from Impressionism to Fauvism. Matisse was influenced by his trips to Russia and North Africa.
In the 1940's Matisse turned to making collages with paper cutouts. He considered these to be among his greatest works. The bold colorful shapes of these works make excellent needlepoint projects.
