Gisbert Combaz (1861-1941) was one of the leading Belgian practitioners of the Art Nouveau style, popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Trained as a lawyer, Combaz soon turned to design. He developed a unique cloisonne style of patterned images (birds, figures, land and seascapes) enclosed in a darkly colored outline. He worked in many media: paintings, lithographs, drawings and sculpture. His work is widely collected and is in leading collections of Art Nouveau throughout Europe and the United States.
Combaz's designs make for wonderful needlepoint canvases with their bold forms and colors combined with their sensuous Art Nouveau flowing lines.
The canvases have all been optimized for needlepoint and are extremely "stitcher friendly."
